CHICAGO — Edgewater Castle Football Club fell 5-0 to the Chicago Dutch Lions FC Saturday, June 27 at Winnemac Stadium, dropping to a season record of 2-8 with two games remaining in the 2026 USL League 2 season.
Goalkeeper Felix Davies set the tone early, diving for a stop in the opening minute to keep the game level. The Dutch Lions broke through in the 12th minute, opening scoring off a free kick headed in by forward Tristen Banquil.
Chicago's midfielder Milan Shah added two more before halftime — the first in the 29th minute, breaking away with a four-to-two player advantage and sneaking the ball around Davies, and the second in the 35th minute after pouncing on a headed pass intended for Davies which came up short.
The Rooks had their opportunities in the first half. Forward Sebastian Bugere stole possession and passed the ball forward for forward Andres Rocha, but his shot went wide left. Edgewater Castle created pressure for the Chicago defense throughout, but headed into the break down 3-0.
Coming out of halftime, Edgewater Castle continued to push forward and attack Chicago throughout the second half. Despite the final score, Davies stayed strong between the posts, finishing with nine saves.
Some of the best chances at getting on the board came late in the match. Forward Jack McFeely got off a strong shot in the second half which was stopped before the line, and a penalty kick in the 90th minute sailed wide left.
The match featured a total of five cautions handed out by officials, with four Edgewater Castle players receiving cautions to Chicago's one.
Interim head coach Chris Cheney said the result came down to consistency.
"We had our moments," Cheney said. "We just have yet to put 90 minutes together this year. We've had a few good moments, then we give the ball away in a dangerous place. We miscommunicate. We just haven't been consistent enough."
Cheney credited the opposition while keeping focus on what comes next.
"Credit to Dutch Lions — bottom line is they all work," he said. "It's always bigger than any one result. Just gotta go again next week and try to put a better performance together and end the season on a positive note."
The Rooks will look to bounce back next week, when they take on the St. Croix Legends in Stillwater, Minn. in their final road game of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, July 5 and streaming is available on SportsEngine Play.
