CHICAGO — Edgewater Castle Football Club defeated RKC Third Coast Saturday, May 23, in a 1-0 victory. Midfielder and captain Kily Egan scored the lone goal for the Rooks in the 20th minute of play. Goalkeeper Molly Vapensky recorded five saves in the shutout.

Head coach Emma Woodley said she’s happy with the team’s performance and ability to maintain back-to-back clean sheets with two different goalkeepers — Vapensky and Cynthia Waller, who played in the previous match.

“Our defenders and goalkeepers are very solid,” Woodley said. “I’m really proud of them for keeping two clean sheets and just really communicating and staying organized.”

Action in the first half started in the sixth minute when forward Kristina Lynch sent a cross intended for forward Katherine Stephens, but RKC’s goalkeeper Ella Kratochvil snagged the ball before Stephens got to it.

RKC Third Coast took their first shot attempt in the 16th minute, when midfielder Olivia Hernandez’s shot went just right of the net. ECFC answered almost immediately, following a handball from RKC Third Coast. Egan attempted to head a shot into the net, but it went right.

In the 20th minute, midfielder Lucy Tang took a corner for the Rooks, connecting the ball to the head of defender Eva Pattison. As the ball fell, Egan took a shot on the right side, scoring for the Rooks and claiming a 1-0 lead.

In the 37th minute, RKC Third Coast’s defender Allessandra Russo received a yellow card for a bad tackle. The Rooks lost control of their throw, allowing midfielder Jenna Brouwer to launch a shot right into the hands of Vapensky.

A wide shot from RKC Third Coast’s forward Kate Brown ended the first half, with the Rooks ahead 1-0.

The second half maintained a slow pace, according to Woodley, who said she saw the team slow down but highlighted the maintained effort and improvements from their previous match.

“A little bit less energy in the second half,” Woodley said. “There was a few moments that we were really, really excited about. We put some really great combinations together, moved the ball well through the middle and some really exciting opportunities up top in the final third.”

Tang got off the first shot for the Rooks in the 46th minute, taking a shot and a corner kick which were both caught by Kratochvil.

At the beginning of the 63rd minute, Kratochvil dove to stop a shot from Stephens. On the subsequent corner kick, Tang’s shot bounced off of Pattison’s head and smacked into the cross bar, just missing a goal.

In the 82nd minute, Stephens received a yellow card for a bad tackle. RCK Third Coast’s defender Elsa Stedman took the freekick and turned the possession back over to the Rooks.

After an offsides call on Pattison, the match ended in favor of the Rooks 1-0.

The Rooks will continue their USL W slate Tuesday May 26, taking on River Light FC. Kickoff at Holmgren Athletic Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at edgewatercastlefc.com, and streaming is available on SportsEngine Play.
