Player Feature: Murtadha Kamil

Updated: Jun 12

Murtadha Kamil, a striker on the Men’s First Team, has been a player for Edgewater Castle FC since the club’s founding in 2017. After his four-goal game last Wednesday against SAC Wisla Chicago, Kamil offers a look into his motivations as a player and his favorite moments at ECFC in this part of our Player Feature series.

What’s your earliest memory of playing soccer, and when did you realize you wanted to play it in your adult life?

“I grew up playing soccer. I don’t know when exactly, maybe seven or six years old, but I wanted to play adult soccer ever since I started. I was always watching soccer on the TV, and I always wanted to be a soccer player.”

What was the biggest challenge you faced on your journey to becoming a semi-professional soccer player?

“Honestly, [balancing time between] school and work [and playing soccer]. But I got over the challenges and worked my way around them. I’m still overcoming the challenges in my life and still doing all I have to do [to be a successful player].”

Who has been the most influential coach or mentor in your career?

“There are a few. Coach Woijeck [Piotrowski] [is the first coach that comes to mind]. He used to coach Edgewater [Castle]. He was a very good coach, I really liked him, and he taught me a lot. I will never forget whatever he taught me.

Is there a moment in your career you’re most proud of?

“Everytime I score, man! Especially after tonight!” (Kamil scored 4 goals against SAC Wisla prior to this interview.)

What does your typical day look like during the season vs. during the offseason?

“I wake up in the morning, go to work for a nine and a half hour shift until Saturday [gamedays]. But I like it! Offseason is just pretty much just work and working out, honestly. Working on my stamina and whatever I need on the field.

How do you handle pressure or nerves before big games?

“I love pressure! I love playing under pressure. If you ever want the best out of me [as a player], just give me pressure.Once I have some pressure on me I’m a beast!”

If you weren’t playing soccer semi-professionally, what do you think you’d be doing instead?

“I don’t know honestly. Probably just what I do right now in the offseason honestly.”

Why did you join ECFC?

“When I was playing in high school, our coach referred us to [ECFC President and General Manager Andrew Swanson] when he was starting up [Edgewater Castle] for Chicago Futsal. That was my beginning: from high school to Edgewater [Castle].”

What has been your favorite memory with the team?

“There are a few when we won games, but there’s no one in particular that I can think of. Today was pretty special though!”

What is your favorite pregame song?

“I don’t listen to any pre-game songs. I usually call people before I [play], like friends and stuff,

Who’s your favorite soccer player?

“Has to be [Cristiano] Ronaldo - he’s the GOAT!”

What’s your favorite pregame meal?

“I usually eat oatmeal, milk, and some bananas two hours before the game to get some energy for my body.”

What advice would you give to young players who want to continue playing soccer later in life?

“The key for becoming a football player is consistency. No matter what, just stay consistent. Even if you’re feeling off about anything, just go work out and try your best. Never stop.”
